    Best of GreenBuild Webcast Series -- Greening What's Already Here: LEED EB:O&M is the New Preservation Tool

    If you missed 2014 GreenBuild, now is your chance to see some of the top-notch sessions that were recorded.

    The construction and operation of buildings accounts for almost 50% of greenhouse gas emissions in the U.S. But reusing our existing buildings to make them more energy and resource efficient is one of the most immediate and measurable ways to address this growing concern. Historic buildings; such as the National Center for Preservation Technology & Training's 1923 Lee H. Nelson Hall in Louisiana; are retrofitting their buildings by combining time-tested preservation methods with green building practices.

    NCPTT is using the greening of their headquarters as a transparent model process; leveraging their significant role in preservation research while demonstrating how to be better stewards. By using the growing body of sustainable preservation case studies; conducting eco-charrettes; energy audits and a sustainability management plan; understanding the original character-defining features of the building and integrating the necessary envelope; systems and site improvements with acknowledged green building practices; NCPTT has decided to use the LEED EB: O&M rating system (targeting LEED Gold) as the metric to guide both the maintenance and rehabilitation approaches at the site. New technologies and reactivation of original design features can provide innovations in green building design while debunking the myths that historic buildings cannot readily achieve LEED certification.

    Learning Objectives
    • Demonstrate how original character-defining features in existing and historic buildings can be reactivated to improve energy and resource efficiency.;
    • Discuss the importance of greening the operations of existing and historic buildings.;
    • Demonstrate how LEED EB: O&M can be used as a cyclical maintenance and preservation tool.;
    • Identify the cultural and preservation metrics in the past and current versions of the LEED rating system and how the recognition and use of these metrics has been improving.

    Moderator:
    Barbara Campagna, Barbara A. Campagna/Architecture + Planning; PLLC

    Presenters:

    Best of GreenBuild Webcast Series -- Greening LEED Volume Modeling and M&V: A Love Story?

    If you missed 2014 GreenBuild, now is your chance to see some of the top-notch sessions that were recorded.

    How do you make a small building with diverse loads efficient? What is the best way to model non-regulated equipment and refrigeration systems?  How does a team effectively show energy savings in process or plug loads?  Does the post-occupancy data support the modeled energy use? What changes would you make to help future models reflect real-world energy profiles?  All these questions and, hopefully, the answers will be presented as part of this educational session.  A convenience store has many special energy use situations, but most of these challenges are found in all buildings (i.e., high plug loads, server loads, process loads), although, relevant post-occupancy data on these challenges are rarely available.  This presentation will show original modeled energy use, archived energy use data, and real-time energy use profiles from various facilities in multiple climate zones.  Modeling refrigeration energy use and defining/documenting improved energy efficiency of the refrigeration will be reviewed.

    The project team will embarrass themselves by sharing their original modeling process, design assumptions, and expected energy use by load.  Challenges associated with developing energy models for multiple climate zones under the LEED Volume program will also be referenced in the program.

    Learning Objectives
    • Participants will be able to correctly address and reconcile process load efficiency in an energy model.
    • Audience members will understand the process required to effectively define and measure energy use by category.
    • Participants will be able to define reasonable expectations concerning the ability of energy modeling software to reflect real-world energy use.
    • Audience members will be able to define systems that will provide post-occupancy information allowing them to provided predictive maintenance and troubleshooting.

    Presenters:
    • Chris Ladner, LEED Fellow, CxA, CEM; Owner, Viridian, Little Rock, Arkansas
    • Danny Halel, CVE; Application Engineering Manager, Hussmann Corporation, Bridgeton, Missouri
    • Chris Deal, LEED BD+C; Senior Project Manager, MODUS, Des Moines, Iowa

    This session is approved for 1 hour of LEED Specific (BD+C) GBCI hours.

    In-Person Location: Auld & White Constructors, 4168 Southpoint Parkway, Jacksonville, FL 32216

    COST:
