IEQ Evaluation in Schools Through Post Occupancy Evaluation

    Best of Greenbuild Webcast Series

1 hour of LEED Specific BD+C  GBCI Credit

Carnegie Mellon University’s Center for Building Performance and Diagnostics (CBPD) has developed an Indoor Environmental Assessment Toolkit (IDEAS), for teachers to independently evaluate the indoor environmental conditions of their classroom and identify areas that need to be improved in order to enhance the classroom environment.

The session will first review current guidelines that exist for IEQ and those that are applicable to schools. Case studies and research analyses that identify how IEQ affects the health and productivity of teachers and students will be presented. The toolkit utilizes established Post Occupancy Evaluation (POE) methodologies. POE includes qualitative and quantitative building and occupancy assessments.

An overview of the background of POE, its use in the industry, and how it was implemented in the toolkit will be discussed. The toolkit was tested in multiple Pennsylvania schools and results from the pilot case studies will be presented followed by recommendations that schools administrators can implement in their own school environments. The session will also include personal experiences from a school Principal who tested the toolkit in her facility. The session concludes with a live demonstration of the toolkit and instructions for audience members to access the toolkit online for use in their facilities.

    Learning Objectives

    • Identify the effects of IEQ on health and productivity of the building occupants and distinguish IEQ from IAQ.
    • Discuss the IEQ metrics available in the industry for schools.
    • Recognize the pros and cons of Post Occupancy Evaluation and understand how to carry out an IEQ assessment in a school using School toolkit.
    • Conduct an analysis of SEAT results and evaluate the strategies needed to create a healthier school environment.

        TRAILER

A competition where less is more.

Do you think it's possible to live without producing garbage?

In this multi-award winning, festival favorite, partners Jen and Grant go head to head in a competition to see who can swear off consumerism and produce the least garbage. Their light-hearted competition is set against a darker examination of the problem waste.  Even as Grant and Jen start to garner interest in their project, they struggle to find meaning in their minuscule influence on the large-scale environmental impacts of our “throw-away society”. Described as An Inconvenient Truth meets Super Size Me, The Clean Bin Project features laugh out loud moments, stop motion animations, and unforgettable imagery. Captivating interviews with renowned artist, Chris Jordan and TED Lecturer Captain Charles Moore, make this film a fun and inspiring call to individual action that speaks to crowds of all ages.

Best of GreenBuild Webcast Series - Understanding the Legal Landscape of Transparency for Designers (REBROADCAST due to high demand)

If you missed 2014 GreenBuild, now is your chance to see some of the top-notch sessions that were recorded.

Our industry is in the early stages of a transformational discussion of materials and human health. Consistent with the now established calls for communication of ingredients in food labeling, designers are asking that building product ingredients be disclosed. Prompted by questions from practitioners arising from new transparency tools and disclosed ingredients, in October 2013 BuildingGreen hosted a dialog among legal counsels from four architectural practices, “Increased Transparency, Increased Liability?” Core contributors from the original webinar will reconvene to reflect on changes to the industry over the first year of v4 and the new MRc4, “Building Product Disclosure and Optimization.” What predicted issues have arisen and what surprises have emerged? Does asking for HPDs expose a firm to additional liability? What is the responsibility of design professionals to assess the danger, the hazard, or the exposure based on disclosed information? Without disclosure, isn’t it easier to argue that the manufacturer bears that responsibility entirely?

        Learning Objectives
        • Articulate legal issues that have arisen in the first year of transparency as a strategy in LEED v4
        • Distinguish between the legal exposure of being aware of the contents of Material Safety Data Sheets and Health Product Declarations.
        • Make their own judgment of the risks of requesting material ingredients for building products.
        • Understand how leading legal counsels are advising their firms to manage the new transparency data.

        Presenters
        • Russell Perry, LEED AP BD+C, FAIA, Co-Director of Sustainable Design, SmithGroupJJR, Washington, District of Columbia

Best of GreenBuild Webcast Series - The LEED Dynamic Plaque: Scoring Building Performance

If you missed 2014 GreenBuild, now is your chance to see some of the top-notch sessions that were recorded.

The LEED rating system thrives because it encourages competition: LEED scores enable comparisons of buildings based on the credits they achieve.  The LEED Dynamic Plaque, a platform for continuing certification of LEED buildings, harnesses this approach in a new way.  It compares buildings by using measured data to create a LEED performance score.  This global building performance score drives more active, long-term management of real estate assets while giving project teams latitude to be creative in how they improve; the score allows teams to focus on building performance rather than LEED compliance.  In this session, Scot Horst will tell the story of performance in LEED, give examples of how the LEED Dynamic Plaque is working in buildings, and explain how the platform leverages the core of the LEED rating system to encourage action.  He will describe the dynamic plaque’s distinctive approach to scoring, as well as shy LEED is uniquely situated to define how we compare buildings going forward.

        Learning Objectives

        • Identify how LEED has, and continues to, encourage building performance.
        • Explain how the LEED Dynamic Plaque relates to the rating system.
        • Describe the LEED Performance Score
        • Distinguish between scoring credits (strategies) and scoring measured data (outcomes)

Best of GreenBuild Series Webcast: Passivhaus Office: A Real World Case Study

With the introduction of the more stringent energy requirements of LEED v4 and the coming 2030 Challenge, building designers are looking for new strategies to achieve greater energy performance.  In Munich, Germany, Intep and Epsten Group worked together on NuOffice, a Passivhaus inspired office building which achieved 94 points and LEED CS 2009 Platinum Certification.  Participants will learn how Passivhaus principals and advanced strategies and technologies such as passive ventilation, activated radiant slabs, geothermal systems (geothermal absorption heat pump and free geothermal cooling), exhaust air energy recovery, and photovoltaics were applied to design and construct a building 53% more efficient than the ASHRAE 90.1 2007 baseline building.  The presentation will explore the basic principles of the Passivhaus standard and how they were applied at NuOffice, the challenges encountered in optimizing the energy performance of a speculative core and shell project, and the difficulties the project team overcame in reconciling European techniques and energy systems with North American energy standards like ASHRAE Standard 90.1 and the LEED Rating System.  The presentation will also include a look at post-occupancy energy consumption data from NuOffice and explore how the project’s Passivhaus inspired design is performing relative to design expectations.

              Learning Objectives

              • Participant will be able to recognize the origins and basic principles of Passivhaus and how they were applied at NuOffice.
              • Participant will be able to recognize some of the advanced technologies used at NuOffice to achieve greater energy performance.
              • Participant will be able to recognize the challenges inherent in improving the energy performance of core and shell projects and adapting European systems to North American standards.
              • Participant will be able to recognize how the design assumptions of Passivhaus inspired building relate to the actual energy consumption, operations, and maintenance of the facility.

              Presenters:

              • Presenter: Pete Choquette, AIA, LEED AP BD+C, ID+C, O+M, Design and Consulting Department Manager, Epsten Group, Inc. Atlanta, GA
